Top Law Student Blog

Posted by AustinGroothuis | 27 Apr, 2006

Top Law Student Blog is a great advice blog written by another current law student. The advice is aimed at first year students but most of the advice is pertinent to students who plan on entering law school in the future.(His/her endorsements of CALI here and here get this blogger extra points with us!)

What is moot court?
Moot Court in law school is generally a team of 2nd year and 3rd year students who competitively argue mock appellate cases.

They do so as a team against other schools for some competitions, and against each other for other competitions. More below...

Update on the Law School Curve

Posted by AustinGroothuis | 20 Apr, 2006

A pertinent/timely discussion taking place at Leiter's Law School Report regarding some comments on the effects of incoming law students receiving mostly high grades as undergrads HERE.

This really reinforces what I said the other day. An incoming law student cannot come into law school expecting the sort of grade performance he/she likely became accustomed to in undergrad.

Competition and the Mandatory Curve in Law School

Posted by AustinGroothuis | 18 Apr, 2006

Updated July 11, 2007 (see end of post)*

I am sure you have heard some comments like the ones that I heard during pre-law school visits to campus: "Our law school isn't that competitive. I don't know anyone who failed out. Not to mention, our students and faculty are so friendly!"

competition

These comments are generally correct in my experience. I have made a lot of friends and met a lot of great people in law school. I'm in no danger of failing out. So why is there so much fuss about competition in law school?

These sort of statements by law schools miss the mark because competition is inherent in almost every aspect of law school. See more below...

The Socratic Method

Posted by AustinGroothuis | 12 Apr, 2006

The Socratic method is one of the most written about, talked about, and feared aspects of law school. There is an extensive debate about this method's usefulness as a teaching tool.

But if you are going to law school, you will have to deal with the Socratic method. So here is a little summary of the Socratic method including some personal experience and advice.

New Direction of Upcoming Posts

Posted by AustinGroothuis | 11 Apr, 2006

Now that CALI's learnthelaw.org is up and running smoothly thanks to the brilliant tech guys at CALI, I would like to start focusing on this blog a little more.

I now hope to change the direction of this blog from simply education-related posts. As a second-year law student at Chicago-Kent School of Law, I plan to add some discussion about information and advice for pre-laws from the perspective of a current law student.

This doesn't make me an expert on all things (or anything) law school. But with all of the information about law school out there for pre-laws, most is written by current professors or former law students. What is missing is serious and honest discussion/information/advice for pre-laws from the perspective of someone who is living through the experience of law school.

Also note, I am a new employee of CALI. Some of these upcoming posts will not necessarily reflect the views or advice of CALI. Stay tuned for the next post...

Adverse Possession

Posted by AustinGroothuis | 3 Apr, 2006

Adverse possession is one of the first concepts you are likely to learn in your Property course. Adverse possession in Property Law is a fascinating rule that allows a person to gain ownership of a property from that propety's owner without the the owner's consent by going through a few legal loopholes.

On her Classcaster blog, Professor Marla Mansfield of the University of Tulsa College of Law posted a couple of podcasts that summarized adverse possession, its requirements, and its policies for her Property class. Links are below

Part One of Professor Mansfield's Summary of Adverse Possession
